Issue occasion

The coin commemorates the 250th anniversary of the *Ratio Educationis* of 1777. This was a fundamental regulation of the education system in the Kingdom of Hungary.

Background on the topic
The *Ratio Educationis* emerged during the era of state reforms under Maria Theresia. Education was increasingly regarded as a task of state administration and was no longer left exclusively to the churches and individual municipalities. The regulation was connected with the reforms of the Habsburg Empire, which aimed to bring administration, the economy and the education system under greater order. Inspiration also came from contemporary school reforms in the Austrian lands.

It provided for an order structured according to school levels and educational pathways. Among other things, it distinguished between elementary schools, higher schools, academies and universities. Subjects taught, school supervision and the responsibilities of the authorities were laid down. The training and supervision of teachers were also to be improved. This created a uniform framework for schools in a politically and linguistically diverse area.

However, the regulation did not yet constitute general compulsory schooling in the modern sense. Its implementation varied depending on the region, denomination and available financial resources. Schools often remained dependent on ecclesiastical sponsors or municipalities. Nevertheless, the *Ratio Educationis* strengthened the state’s influence over education and promoted the idea that elementary education should be accessible to broader sections of the population.

For the territory of present-day Slovakia, the occasion is connected with the history of the then Kingdom of Hungary. Schools of various ecclesiastical and linguistic traditions existed there. The new order therefore served not only as an administrative plan but also as an attempt to integrate different educational institutions into a common system. It thus formed one of the early steps towards state-supervised educational administration in this region.

The choice of this occasion for a Slovak commemorative coin is explained by this historical connection and the round anniversary. The coin does not commemorate an individual person but a reform whose consequences shaped the development of schools, teacher training and state educational organisation over a long period.
