About the “2-euro joint issues” series

The first joint issue was released in 2007, marking the 50th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome, by 13 countries; it depicts the Treaty on the paving of the Capitoline Hill in Rome. In 2009, “10 Years of Economic and Monetary Union” followed in 16 countries—known among collectors as the “stick figures” issue because of its design. In 2012, 17 countries commemorated “10 Years of Euro Cash”; in 2015 and 2022, there were 19 countries each time: for 30 years of the European flag and 35 years of the Erasmus programme, respectively.

Anyone wishing to collect a joint issue in full therefore needs not one coin, but up to 19—even five different coins from Germany, bearing the mintmarks A, D, F, G and J. A special feature is found on the coins from Luxembourg: because every coin issued there must show the Grand Duke, his portrait is incorporated as a latent image. The microstates of Andorra, Monaco, San Marino and Vatican City are not permitted to participate in joint issues.

The coin jointly issued by Germany and France in 2013 for the Élysée Treaty, and the coin issued by the three Baltic states in 2018 to mark 100 years of independence, do not count as joint issues of all euro countries. For 2029, the 25th anniversary of the 2004 EU enlargement has been announced as the sixth joint issue.
