Issue occasion

The coin commemorates the Christmas market as part of the pre-Christmas tradition in Latvia.

Background on the topic
In Latvia, present-day Christmas customs combine Christian forms of celebration with older winter traditions. These include decorating trees, singing songs, communal celebrations and certain customs associated with the winter solstice. After the restoration of state independence, such traditions were increasingly also understood as an expression of Latvia’s own cultural identity.

Riga plays a special role. Since the Middle Ages, the city had been a trading centre in the Baltic region and was strongly influenced by German-speaking merchants and artisans. It was in this urban setting that commercial and festive traditions emerged which later became associated with the Christmas season. Riga also traces an early public display of a decorated Christmas tree back to 1510. The tradition is disputed between Riga and Tallinn; it is certain, however, that the festive and commercial culture of the Baltic cities had early contacts with the Christmas customs of the German-speaking world.

Today’s seasonal markets build on this development without constituting an unchanged continuation of medieval practices. They combine the sale of handicrafts, food and gifts with music, lighting and social encounters in public spaces. In Latvia, local products and traditional dishes are also part of their character. The market thus becomes a place where older customs are transferred to a modern urban environment.

The choice of this theme for a commemorative coin can be explained above all by its broad presence in everyday life. Rather than representing a single historical event, the occasion stands for a recurring form of communal celebration and for the connection between urban history, handicrafts and family rituals. At the same time, it points to Riga as Latvia’s cultural centre and to the country’s historical ties with the Baltic region and Central Europe.
