About the “UNESCO World Heritage Site” series
The series began with the Old Town of Córdoba (2010) and the Alhambra in Granada (2011), followed by Burgos Cathedral, the Royal Site of San Lorenzo, El Escorial, the Works of Antoni Gaudí, the Cave of Altamira, the Old Town of Segovia and its Aqueduct, the monuments of Oviedo, Santiago de Compostela, Ávila, the Mudejar Architecture of Aragon, Toledo, Garajonay National Park on La Gomera, Cáceres, Seville, Salamanca and, in 2026, Poblet Monastery. The Archaeological Ensemble of Mérida has been announced for 2027.
There is a marked change in the mintages: up to 2016, each coin was issued with a mintage of four million, while in 2017 the figure fell to just 500,000 and in 2018, for Santiago de Compostela, to 300,000 – the lowest mintage in the series and consequently a sought-after issue. Since 2020, mintages have once again ranged between one and four million.
As Spain is home to around 50 World Heritage Sites, the end of the series is still nowhere in sight. Further Spanish commemorative coins can be found on the Spain page.
