The coin commemorates the 80 years of existence of the Artistic Ensemble Lúčnica. It thus commemorates the ensemble’s founding in 1948.
Background on the topic
Lúčnica emerged in the post-war period, when numerous cultural initiatives in what was then Czechoslovakia were engaging with the regional traditions of Slovakia. The ensemble brings together dances, songs and instrumental music from various Slovak regions. Its basis consists of traditional forms adapted for the stage and combined with unified choreography, musical accompaniment and costume design.
Its repertoire includes, among other things, folk dances from the mountainous regions, lowlands and villages of Slovakia. The aim is not to present everyday life unchanged, but rather to create an artistic stage version of folk culture. Dances, songs and musical motifs are selected, arranged and adapted for performances by larger groups. In this way, Lúčnica also made regional customs accessible to audiences who were not directly familiar with them.
The development of the ensemble is closely associated with the choreographer and artistic director Štefan Nosáľ. For decades, he shaped the style of Lúčnica and helped develop an independent stage language from traditional dance material. His work combined precise observation of Slovak dance traditions with the requirements of a modern ensemble performance.
Lúčnica performed not only in Slovakia, but also presented Slovak music, dances and traditional costumes abroad. During the era of state-organized culture and a divided Europe, such performances provided opportunities to make national cultural characteristics visible internationally. After the end of communist rule, the ensemble remained part of Slovakia’s professional cultural life.
The choice of this occasion for a commemorative coin therefore relates to the long-term impact of an institution that collects, shapes and passes on regional traditions from one generation to the next. At the same time, it points to the role of dance and music as expressions of Slovak cultural identity.
