The coin commemorates the 20th anniversary of Bulgaria’s accession to the European Union. It honors two decades of Bulgaria’s membership in the EU.
Background on the topic
Bulgaria’s accession to the European Union took place in the context of the political reorganisation of Europe following the end of the Cold War. After transitioning from a communist state system to a pluralistic political system and a market-oriented economic order, the country increasingly aligned its foreign policy with the European Communities. Bulgaria formally applied for EU membership in 1995.
Accession negotiations began in 2000. Conditions for accession included stable democratic institutions, the rule of law, the protection of minorities and a functioning market economy. Bulgaria also had to align its legislation with the common rules of the European Union. The Treaty of Accession was signed in 2005. Together with Romania, Bulgaria joined the Union on 1 January 2007, increasing the number of member states to 27.
The accession was preceded by intensive reforms, particularly in administration, the judiciary and the fight against corruption and organised crime. For Bulgaria and Romania, the European Commission therefore established a special monitoring mechanism after accession. Regular reports assessed whether the two states were fulfilling their obligations in these areas. This mechanism shaped the first years of membership and made clear that accession was not merely a political decision, but also an ongoing process of adjustment.
The choice of this occasion for a commemorative coin refers to a clearly defined event in Bulgaria’s recent history. Accession to the EU marked the country’s institutional integration into a common European legal and political system and was achieved after a prolonged period of political and economic change. A round anniversary therefore provides an opportunity to recall in the public memory the development of Bulgaria’s relations with the European Union and the associated obligations.
