Issue occasion

The issue commemorates the 450th anniversary of the death of the Italian Renaissance painter Tizian, who died in Venice in 1576. He is considered one of the most important representatives of Venetian painting.

Background on the topic
Titian, whose full name was Tiziano Vecellio, came from Pieve di Cadore, a place in the territory ruled by the Republic of Venice. He received his training in Venice, where he initially worked in the circles of Giovanni Bellini and Giorgione. At that time, the city was a trading center with far-reaching political and cultural connections. Wealthy families, religious institutions and foreign rulers commissioned numerous works from artists.

A defining characteristic of Titian’s painting is the use of color as a central compositional element. Figures, light and spatial depth were often created through superimposed layers of color and graduated tones. This approach was associated with the Venetian tradition of “colorito” and differed from the greater emphasis on draughtsmanship and compositional construction, known as “disegno”, in Central Italian art.

Titian created altarpieces, portraits, mythological scenes and religious works. His well-known works include the “Assumption of the Virgin” (“Himmelfahrt Mariens”) and the “Pala Pesaro” in the Venetian church of Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, as well as the “Venus of Urbino” (“Venus von Urbino”). For the Spanish king Philipp II., he painted a series of mythological works that he himself called “poesie”. Emperor Karl V. was also among his patrons. His portraits combined individual facial features with a deliberate depiction of imperial authority.

His long career also reflects the transformation of European art in the 16th century: from the balanced compositions of the High Renaissance towards freer brushwork and more dramatic effects of light. His workshop enabled the execution of numerous commissions and the dissemination of his pictorial ideas beyond Venice.

The choice of the anniversary for an Italian commemorative coin refers to Titian’s role in Italy’s cultural heritage and to the international influence of Venetian painting. The round anniversary provides the specific occasion for the state commemoration.
