Issue occasion

The commemorative coin is dedicated to the historical cultural region of Sēlija. The design features its coat of arms as well as the inscriptions “LATVIJA” and “SĒLIJA”. The national side was designed by the Latvian artist Laimonis Šēnbergs.

The design
The design depicts the coat of arms of the historic cultural region of Sēlija. The name of the issuing country, “LATVIJA”, appears along the upper edge. The inscription “SĒLIJA” is shown along the lower edge, with the year of issue “2025” to its right.
The twelve stars of the European flag are depicted on the coin’s outer ring.
Background on the topic
Sēlija, also known in German as Selonien, lies in southeastern Latvia south of the Daugava (Düna) and borders Lithuania. The region has no consistently defined administrative boundaries. Rather, it is defined by shared historical, linguistic and cultural traditions. It includes areas around places such as Ilūkste, Viesīte and Aknīste; Sēlpils on the Daugava is regarded as its historical centre.

The name derives from the Seli, a Baltic tribe that settled the area in the Middle Ages. Their language gradually disappeared, but left traces in place names and local dialects. In the 13th century, during the Baltic Crusades, the settlement area came under the rule of the Schwertbrüderorden and the Bishopric of Riga. Later, larger parts belonged to the Duchy of Courland and Semigallia (Herzogtum Kurland und Semgallen), while the location on the Daugava and along shifting borders of rule shaped regional development.

For a long time, Sēlija was often treated as part of Zemgale (Semgallia), the historical region of Semigallia. Since the restoration of Latvian independence, awareness of a distinct Selonian identity has become more prominent. Latvia’s law on the historical lands explicitly recognises Sēlija, alongside Kurzeme (Courland), Latgale, Vidzeme and Zemgale, as a separate historical land. This classification serves to protect regional culture and identity, not to create additional administrative units.

The regional coat of arms depicts a silver stag on a red background. It belongs to the system of heraldic symbols with which Latvia distinguishes its historical lands from one another. The coin issue is not based on a single anniversary or historical event. Rather, it completes a series of Latvian 2-euro commemorative coins dedicated to the country’s historical and cultural regions. Sēlija received its own coin design only later, as its official recognition and heraldic distinction from Zemgale are more recent.
