Issue occasion

The coin commemorates the 1100-year anniversary of the Kingdom of Croatia (Königreich Kroatien) and the coronation of King Tomislav in 925. The design depicts King Tomislav on horseback, as well as the Croatian checkerboard as part of the coat of arms of the Republic of Croatia (Republik Kroatien). The depiction is based on a work by the sculptor Robert Franges Mihanovic from 1938 and was designed by Nikola Vudrag.

The design
The central coin motif is King Tomislav on horseback. The other motif is the characteristic and recognizable emblem of Croatia, the Croatian checkerboard, which forms part of the coat of arms of the Republic of Croatia.

The following inscriptions also run along the inner ring of the coin: the words “KRALJ TOMISLAV” (King Tomislav), the year of his coronation “925”, the issuing country “REPUBLIKA HRVATSKA” (Republic of Croatia), and the year of issue of the coin “2025”.

The national side of the coin was designed by the sculptor Nikola Vudrag. The central motif is his version of the original work by the sculptor Robert Franges Mihanovic from 1938.

The twelve stars of the European flag are depicted on the outer ring of the coin.
Background on the topic
Tomislav ruled over Croatia in the early 10th century and is traditionally regarded as the first Croatian king. Only a few contemporary accounts of his person and reign have survived. In a letter from Pope John X connected with a church synod in Split, he is referred to as the “King of the Croats”. However, there is no contemporary evidence of a formal coronation ceremony. The year 925 therefore primarily marks the earliest reliable evidence of his royal title.

Under Tomislav, the previously separate Croatian realms along the Adriatic coast and in the inland areas were brought closer together. At that time, Croatia lay between several political centres of power: the Dalmatian coastal cities under Byzantine influence, the Bulgarian Empire, the expanding Hungarians and Western Christianity shaped by the papacy. Later traditions attribute military successes and an extensive realm to Tomislav; however, details and precise boundaries cannot be determined reliably due to the sparse source material.

The Synods of Split in 925 and 928 regulated ecclesiastical jurisdictions in Dalmatia and Croatia. Among other matters, they concerned the primacy of the Archdiocese of Split and the ecclesiastical integration of the Croatian territories. These developments show that Tomislav’s rule was connected not only with territorial organisation but also with the organisation of the Church.

Since the 19th century, Tomislav has been a central figure in Croatian historical narratives. The well-known equestrian monument in Zagreb was created in this context of national remembrance culture. It does not depict him as a historically authenticated portrait, but as an idealised medieval ruler. The Croatian Parliament declared 2025 a commemorative year for the anniversary of the Croatian Kingdom. The coin issue is thus part of a broader state commemorative programme referring to the early roots of Croatian statehood.
