Issue occasion

The commemorative coin is dedicated to the cornflower, Estonia’s national flower. The design features the silhouette of a cornflower, as well as the Latin name “CENTAUREA CYANUS” in a semicircle at the top left. “EESTI” and the year of issue “2024” appear at the bottom.

The design
The coin’s design depicts the silhouette of a cornflower and the semicircular inscription “CENTAUREA CYANUS” (cornflower in Latin) in the upper left. At the bottom, the issuing country “EESTI” and, below it, the year of issue “2024” are shown.

The twelve stars of the European flag are depicted on the coin’s outer ring.
Background on the topic
The cornflower is closely associated with Estonia’s traditional agriculture. Its Estonian name “rukkilill” literally means “rye flower”. The annual plant grew mainly as a field companion among rye and other cereals. As a result, it became a familiar part of the rural cultural landscape and found its way into folk art, textiles and decorative representations. Modern seed cleaning and the use of weed control products have, however, greatly reduced its spread in fields.

The cornflower was chosen as the national flower during the Soviet rule. A publicly supported selection in the 1960s resulted in a clear preference for the plant; since 1968, it has been regarded as a floral national symbol. Its familiarity in the agriculturally shaped way of life and its blue colour were decisive. Alongside black and white, blue is one of Estonia’s national colours. The corresponding flag was not permitted as a state flag in the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic. The blue cornflower could therefore establish a discreet connection with an independent Estonian identity without itself being a state emblem.

Botanically, the cornflower belongs to the daisy family. Its striking flower consists of numerous individual florets; the enlarged outer florets primarily serve to attract insects. It originally spread across large parts of Europe as a companion plant of cereal cultivation.

The coin issue is not tied to a specific anniversary, but honours a lasting national symbol. At the same time, it continues a thematic series: in 2023, Estonia had already featured its national bird species, the barn swallow, on a 2-euro commemorative coin. The choice of the cornflower thus combines a depiction of nature, agricultural cultural history and the development of Estonian national symbolism.
