The coin commemorates the 27th Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government, attended by 19 Latin American countries as well as Spain, Portugal and Andorra. The design features a tree made of human silhouettes and gears as a symbol of social, cultural and educational integration, as well as cooperation among the summit participants in pursuit of a sustainable future. Alongside it are the summit logo, triangles referring to the flag of Andorra and the Sustainable Development Goals, and the inscription “XXVII CIMERA Iberoamericana ANDORRA 2020”.
The design
Andorra, the youngest and smallest member of the Ibero-American Conference, will host this meeting at the highest political level, attended by 19 Latin American countries as well as Spain, Portugal and Andorra, to work towards common goals such as sustainable development.
The coin’s design depicts a tree composed of human silhouettes and gears. The human silhouettes symbolise the integration of society, culture and education in order to achieve a sustainable future. The gears symbolise the synergy of the movements between the ideas and proposals of the participants in this summit.
Next to the tree is the logo of this 27th summit. In the upper section, three triangles represent the colours of the Andorran flag. In the lower section, six triangles represent Andorra’s openness to the Sustainable Development Goals.
Around the coin’s design is the inscription “XXVII CIMERA Iberoamericana ANDORRA 2020” (27th Ibero-American Summit Andorra 2020).
The outer ring of the coin depicts the twelve stars of the European flag.
Background on the topic
Andorra has been a member of the Ibero-American Conference since 2004. Hosting the 27th Summit was therefore an occasion for the principality’s foreign policy to highlight its role in this association of states. Andorra had assumed the chairmanship, or the Pro Tempore Secretariat associated with the preparations, in 2018. The Summit was held under the theme “Innovation for Sustainable Development – Goal 2030”. This took up the United Nations 2030 Agenda, which links economic, social and environmental development goals.
The meeting was originally scheduled to take place in 2020. However, owing to the COVID-19 pandemic, the actual gathering was postponed and held in April 2021 in a predominantly digital format. The year stated on the coin was nevertheless retained, as the issue and design were based on the original planning. At the same time, the pandemic changed the political agenda: alongside digitalisation and innovation, the health and economic consequences of the crisis and equitable access to vaccines were central issues.
The coin issue thus refers to Andorra’s first role as host of an Ibero-American Summit and to the country’s rotating chairmanship. The theme also provided a direct link to international cooperation and the implementation of the UN Sustainable Development Agenda. The actual postponement also makes the coin a record of the pandemic-related interruptions to the diplomatic calendar.
