The coin commemorates the 80th anniversary of the founding of the “Corpo Nazionale dei Vigili del Fuoco”, Italy’s national fire service. At the center is its emblem, surrounded by the inscription “CORPO NAZIONALE DEI VIGILI DEL FUOCO”; the abbreviation “RI”, the mint mark “R” and the initials “LDS” of the coin’s designer Luciana De Simoni are also shown.
The design
At the center of the coin design is the emblem of Italy’s national fire service. To the left of the emblem is “RI”, the abbreviation for the Italian Republic, and to the right is the coin’s year of issue, “2020”, along with “R”, the mark of the Rome Mint. Below the emblem are the initials “LDS” of the coin designer Luciana De Simoni, and above it, arranged in a circle, is the inscription “CORPO NAZIONALE DEI VIGILI DEL FUOCO”.

Background on the topic
Before the nationwide reorganization, firefighting in Italy was primarily the responsibility of municipal and provincial fire brigades. Organization, equipment and training therefore differed from region to region. In 1939, during the fascist dictatorship, these units were combined into a centrally directed state corps and placed under the Ministry of the Interior. This standardization was part of the centralization of state functions at the time, but it also created lasting common structures for personnel, technology and operational command.
Soon afterwards, the fire service was confronted with the consequences of the Second World War. During air raids on Italian cities, its personnel extinguished fires, rescued people trapped under rubble and secured damaged buildings. After the war, the corps remained a nationwide institution and was adapted to the constitutional order of the Republic.
Today, the responsibilities of the Italian fire service extend beyond firefighting. Its remit includes technical assistance, rescue operations following building collapses and traffic accidents, as well as operations after earthquakes, floods and other disasters. It also includes preventive fire protection measures and the monitoring of safety requirements, for example at certain businesses and publicly used buildings. For special situations, the corps has, among other things, specialized units for hazardous substances, high-angle and water rescue, as well as aircraft and firefighting boats.
The corps is distinct from the Italian civil protection administration, but works with it in major emergencies, as well as with regional authorities, emergency services, the police and the armed forces. While civil protection coordinates various state and voluntary forces, the fire service primarily provides technical rescue and hazard prevention expertise.
The choice of the founding anniversary as the occasion for the coin thus refers to a nationwide uniform public institution whose activities are visible both in everyday life and during natural disasters. The use of the corps emblem rather than that of an individual person places the institution and its members jointly at the center.
