2 euro series Germany: Federal States

The German States series is the first and best-known German €2 commemorative coin series: from 2006 to 2022, a coin was issued each year featuring a landmark of the federal state holding the presidency of the Bundesrat at the time – from the Holsten Gate in Lübeck to Wartburg Castle near Eisenach.

About the “Federal States” series

Each coin was minted in a quantity of around 30 million, distributed among Germany’s five mints. A complete collection of the series therefore requires all five mint marks A, D, F, G and J – more than 80 coins for 16 states.

The first four coins, issued from 2006 to 2009, look slightly different from the rest: their twelve stars are not arranged as they are on the European flag. From 2010 onwards, the coins followed the EU’s new design rules.

In 2018, the order of the Bundesrat presidencies was rearranged according to population figures. Schleswig-Holstein, which had already been commemorated on the first coin, was therefore featured for a second time – the series took a break in 2019, and “70 Years of the Bundesrat” was issued instead. With Brandenburg (2020), Saxony-Anhalt (2021) and Thuringia (2022), every state had been represented once. Since 2023, the series has continued with German States II.
