Slovakia · 80th anniversary of the Slovak Folk Art Ensemble SL'UK

SĽUK emerged in the cultural-policy environment of the post-war period, when regional customs, songs, dances and traditional costumes in what was then Czechoslovakia were systematically collected and adapted for the stage. The ensemble was intended not only to document these forms of expression, but also to transform them into a professional format and make them accessible to a wider audience. At the same time, it represents the search for a modern presentation of Slovak cultural identity.

The artistic material of SĽUK consists above all of folk dances, folk music and songs from various regions of Slovakia. The choreographies are based on traditional forms of movement and social customs, but are arranged dramaturgically and shaped as dance pieces for performances. Traditional clothing, musical instruments and regional characteristics are also incorporated into the programmes. SĽUK therefore does not preserve folk culture as unchanged folklore, but conveys it through an independent form of stage art.

Over the course of its activities, SĽUK developed into a professional institution with dancers, musicians and singers. Its performances made Slovak traditions known beyond the country’s borders. In addition to staging performances, its responsibilities include maintaining its repertoire, cooperating with specialists in folk culture and passing on knowledge to younger generations. An important role is played by the combination of research, archiving and artistic interpretation.

The choice of this occasion for a commemorative coin refers to the ensemble’s long-standing continuity. The anniversary does not refer to a single political event, but to the institutional work through which regional cultural forms have been collected, developed further and conveyed to the public over decades. The coin thus commemorates SĽUK as part of Slovak cultural life and the importance of the organised preservation of traditional music and dance traditions.
