Issue occasion

The commemorative coin honors the Magisterium of Pope Leo XIV, that is, his ecclesiastical teaching office. It thus commemorates his activity as pope and his exercise of the teaching office.

Background on the topic
The term “Magisterium” refers to the teaching office of the Church in the Catholic Church. This includes the task of the Pope, together with the bishops, to interpret the teaching on faith and morals and to provide guidance for the life of the Church. The Magisterium encompasses not only individual papal writings, but also addresses, sermons, decisions and other statements, insofar as they serve the proclamation and interpretation of the faith. It stands in the tradition of apostolic transmission and is at the same time directed towards the questions of the present.

Leo XIV’s civil name is Robert Francis Prevost. He belongs to the Order of Saint Augustine and was active in Peru for many years, including as Bishop of Chiclayo. Before his election as Pope, he headed the Dicastery responsible for the appointment of bishops at the Vatican. As a result, he was already familiar with the worldwide organization and the different pastoral situations of the Catholic Church. With his election, he became the first Pope from the United States.

His name refers to earlier popes named Leo, particularly Leo XIII, who dealt intensively with the social and political changes of the industrial age. The choice of name can therefore be understood as an indication of a connection between Church teaching and social challenges. At the same time, it represents the continuation of a papal tradition in which the Magisterium responds to new developments without abandoning its connection to the traditional teaching.

The choice of this theme for a coin can be explained by the beginning of a new pontificate. Such an issue not only records a person’s assumption of office, but also refers to the spiritual and institutional task associated with the office of the Pope. It thus commemorates the public proclamation and interpretation of the Catholic faith under a new Pope.
