Issue occasion

The coin commemorates the second edition of the Games for athletes from Portuguese-speaking countries in Lisboa. The design shows an athlete swinging a ribbon, above which are the Portuguese coat of arms and the inscription “PORTUGAL”. Along the lower edge are “2.os JOGOS DA LUSOFONIA LISBOA”, the initials “INCM” and the name of the engraver “J. AURÉLIO”; the year “2009” can be seen in a loop of the ribbon.

The design
The coin’s inner disc depicts an athlete waving a ribbon. The coat of arms of Portugal is embossed centrally above the ribbon and is enclosed in a semicircle by the name of the issuing country, PORTUGAL. At the lower edge of the coin’s inner disc, the inscription 2.os JOGOS DA LUSOFONIA LISBOA is also embossed in a semicircle between the initials INCM on the left and the engraver’s name J. AURÉLIO on the right. The year 2009 appears in a loop of the ribbon on the left.

The coin’s outer ring depicts the twelve stars of the European flag on concentric lines.
Background on the topic
The term “Lusophony” refers to the states, regions and communities connected by the Portuguese language. It is derived from Lusitania, a Roman province covering parts of the territories of present-day Portugal and Spain. The present-day distribution of Portuguese is primarily a result of Portugal’s maritime and colonial history. Portuguese is an official language, among others, in Angola, Brazil, Cabo Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Mozambique, Portugal, São Tomé and Príncipe, and Timor-Leste. Macau also has linguistic and cultural ties to Portugal as a result of its history.

The Jogos da Lusofonia are an international multisport competition. They are organised by the association of Portuguese-speaking Olympic committees, Associação dos Comités Olímpicos de Língua Oficial Portuguesa (ACOLOP). It should be distinguished from the Community of Portuguese Language Countries, the CPLP: while the CPLP is an intergovernmental organisation, ACOLOP serves cooperation in Olympic sport. Delegations from territories or states with historical ties to the Portuguese language may also participate in the Games.

The first edition of the Games was held in Macau in 2006. Three years later, Lisbon took over as host. The programme included several individual and team sports, including athletics, basketball, futsal, judo, taekwondo, table tennis, volleyball and beach volleyball. In this respect, the event followed the model of other Games that bring together countries connected by a common language or history.

The selection of the event as the subject of a coin can be explained by the connection between sport, the Portuguese language and international cooperation. For Portugal, the event was also a gathering of delegations from various parts of Africa, Asia, Europe and South America. The issue of the coin coincided with the host year and made the concept of Lusophony visible in everyday payment transactions beyond the sporting competition itself.
