The coin commemorates the 200th anniversary of the Exodus of Messolonghi in 1826. The inhabitants and defenders of the city, which was besieged by Ottoman troops, attempted to break out of the siege; the event is regarded as a significant moment in the Greek War of Independence.

Background on the topic
Messolonghi was located in western Greek Aetolia on a lagoon and, because of its coastal location and its connection to the islands, was an important base for the Greek insurgents. During the Greek War of Independence, the city was attacked several times. The final siege began in 1825 and lasted almost a year. Hunger and disease eventually prevailed in the city; supplies had been exhausted, and relief failed to arrive.

The planned breakout took place on the night of 10–11 April 1826. The besieged divided into several groups and attempted to break through the Ottoman lines. However, the plan was betrayed or failed at the fortifications. Many fighters and civilians were killed in the fighting. Others were taken prisoner; only some of those breaking out reached Greek-controlled territory. In the city itself, numerous defenders blew themselves up with their families and the remaining supplies in order to avoid capture.

The fate of Messolonghi was closely followed in Europe. The siege and its outcome strengthened philhellenic support for the Greek cause. There was a particular connection to Lord Byron, who had come to Messolonghi in 1824 and died there shortly afterward. His death further increased public sympathy for the Greek uprising. Visual artists also took up the events; depictions of the destroyed city and its population shaped the European image of the struggle for Greek independence.

The Exodus thus became a permanent part of Greek commemorative culture. It does not represent the victory of a single person or a particular building, but the decision of a besieged community to continue its resistance despite its hopeless situation. The 200th anniversary therefore provides an occasion to remember the victims of the siege and the international impact of the Greek struggle for independence.
