Issue occasion
The issue commemorates the 150th birthday of the Slovenian writer and playwright Ivan Cankar. He is considered one of the most important representatives of Slovenian modernism.
Background on the topic
Ivan Cankar was born in 1876 in Vrhnika near Ljubljana and grew up in a large family of craftsmen under difficult economic circumstances. After completing secondary school, he began studying engineering in Vienna, but soon turned entirely to literature. Extended stays in the Austrian capital, particularly in the working-class district of Ottakring, shaped his perception of social divisions. In 1909, he returned permanently to the Slovenian lands of the Habsburg Monarchy. He died in Ljubljana in 1918.
Cankar wrote short stories, novels, plays, essays and political speeches. In works such as the novel “Na klancu” (“On the Slope”), the play “Hlapci” (“The Serfs”) and the satire “Za narodov blagor” (“For the Welfare of the People”), he addressed poverty, social dependence, opportunism and the conflict between personal conscience and social expectations. He repeatedly criticized the complacent bourgeoisie, political power structures and the influence of ecclesiastical authorities. In doing so, he combined realistic depictions of social milieus with symbolism, psychological portrayal and satirical exaggeration.
His work was created at a time when the Slovenian-speaking population still belonged to the Habsburg Monarchy. Literature therefore had not only an artistic function but also contributed to the development of a common language and cultural identity. Cankar also engaged with socialism, nationalism and the question of how Slovenian autonomy could relate to South Slav cooperation. His position, however, could not be reduced to a coherent political programme.
In Slovenia, Cankar remains present to this day in school education, the theatre repertoire and public spaces. The Cankarjev dom cultural and congress centre in Ljubljana bears his name; he was also depicted on a banknote of the former Slovenian tolar. The coin issue thus builds on an already established state culture of remembrance. The milestone birthday provides the calendar occasion to honour an author whose texts are closely connected with the social and political development of Slovenian society around 1900.
