Issue occasion
The issue commemorates the founding of the National Railway Company of Belgium (NMBS/SNCB) in 1926. In 2026, the Belgian state railway company will have been in existence for 100 years.
Background on the topic
Belgium was one of the first countries in which the state itself promoted railway construction. In 1835, the first public steam-powered railway line on the European mainland was opened between Brussels and Mechelen. The network was intended to connect the different parts of the country, link the port of Antwerp to the industrial regions, and facilitate the transport of coal, steel, and other goods. In the following decades, a dense rail network of state and private railways was established; numerous private lines were later taken over by the state.
After the First World War, damaged facilities had to be restored and railway operations reorganized financially. The railway was therefore removed from direct administration by a ministry and transferred to a more independently managed national company. This was intended to preserve the public character of the network while also defining operational and accounting responsibilities more clearly.
The two abbreviations reflect Belgium’s multilingualism: NMBS stands for “Nationale Maatschappij der Belgische Spoorwegen”, while SNCB stands for “Société nationale des chemins de fer belges”. In the German-speaking part of the country, the designation “Nationale Gesellschaft der Belgischen Eisenbahnen” is also used. The parallel names remain part of the company’s public image to this day.
The organizational structure of the Belgian railway was subsequently changed several times. Today, NMBS/SNCB mainly operates passenger trains and manages railway stations, while Infrabel is responsible for the rail network, signaling technology, and traffic control. The Belgian state owns both companies.
The coin issue thus commemorates not only a company anniversary. It also recalls the institutional reorganization of a means of transport that links commuter traffic, regional connections, and international railway routes in a centrally located European country. The round-number anniversary provided a clearly datable occasion for a state commemorative issue.
