Issue occasion

The commemorative coin is dedicated to the city of Mdina and belongs to the series “Maltese Walled Cities”, which are part of Malta’s and Europe’s cultural heritage. The design depicts Mdina with its towering cathedral and the inscription “MDINA”; the initials “NGB” of the coin designer Noel Galea Bason are also shown.

The design
This coin is part of the “Maltese walled cities” series, which are an integral part of Maltese and European cultural heritage. It follows the coin issued in 2024, featuring “Iċ-Ċittadella”, the citadel of Gozo.

The coin design depicts the city of Mdina with its towering cathedral. The inscription “MDINA” is located above it on the left. The initials of the coin designer, “NGB” (Noel Galea Bason), can be seen at the top right. The name of the issuing country, “MALTA”, is shown along the lower edge, with the year of issue, “2025”, below it.

The outer ring of the coin features the twelve stars of the European flag.
Background on the topic
Mdina lies on a high plateau in the interior of Malta. Its elevated location allowed the control of large parts of the island and facilitated its defence. The settlement dates back to antiquity. In Roman times, it belonged to the city of Melite, which also extended over parts of present-day Rabat. During Arab rule, the inhabited area was reduced in size and more heavily fortified. The name Mdina derives from the Arabic word for “city”.

In the Middle Ages, Mdina was Malta’s political and administrative centre. Numerous members of the Maltese nobility lived here. After the arrival of the Order of St John (Johanniterorden) in 1530, the political centre initially shifted to Birgu and later to Valletta. Mdina nevertheless retained its ecclesiastical and social functions. Because of its quiet old town, which is largely free of traffic, the place is now also known as the “Silent City”.

The townscape is characterised by defensive walls, bastions, narrow streets and palaces. Many buildings reflect Malta’s various periods of rule and construction. Parts of the city were rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693. In the process, Mdina increasingly acquired the Baroque appearance that remains recognisable within the older fortifications to this day. The main gate, too, was built during a later redevelopment under the Order of St John (Johanniterorden).

The cathedral is dedicated to the Apostle Paul. According to the tradition recorded in the Acts of the Apostles, Paul was shipwrecked off Malta and received by the Roman governor Publius. This account is closely connected with the island’s Christian tradition. The present cathedral building was erected after the earthquake to designs by the Maltese architect Lorenzo Gafà.

As a fortified city preserved as a whole, Mdina illustrates several layers of Maltese history: ancient settlement, Arab urban development, medieval administration and Baroque remodelling under the Order of St John (Johanniterorden). This combination of defensive architecture and historic urban structure explains its selection as the subject of a coin.
