Background on the topic
The issue was created as an immediate response to the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which began on 24 February 2022. Estonia supported Ukraine politically, militarily and humanitarily. Estonia’s own history also played a role: during the Second World War, Estonia was occupied by the Soviet Union and incorporated into it against its will. It was not until 1991 that the country restored its state independence. Estonian policy therefore also views the Russian attack in the context of its own security situation and the right of smaller states to self-determination.
The design was created by Daria Titova, a young Ukrainian artist who had come to Estonia as a result of the war and studied at the Estonian Academy of Arts (Estnische Kunstakademie). For the design, Eesti Pank had also approached Ukrainian artists and students living in or having arrived in Estonia. The aim was to incorporate the perspective of those affected themselves into the issue. Part of the proceeds from the sale of special coin packaging was used to support Ukraine.
The Ukrainian greeting “Slawa Ukrajini” means “Glory to Ukraine”. It has historical roots in the Ukrainian independence movement and became widely known again during the protests on Kyiv Maidan in 2013 and 2014. Since 2018, it has also been the official greeting of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. After the beginning of the Russian full-scale invasion, it spread internationally as an expression of solidarity and Ukrainian resistance.
Grain also refers to Ukraine as one of Europe’s major agricultural countries. The war severely affected production and exports and made the world’s dependence on Ukrainian grain supplies visible. The choice of the coin’s occasion thus linked current solidarity with Estonia’s own experience of occupation, regained independence and state self-determination.
