Issue occasion

The coin commemorates the 25th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Slovenia (Republik Slowenien). The design features a diagonal line and the inscriptions “25 LET” and “REPUBLIKA SLOVENIJA”. Below it is “dočákat' dan”, an excerpt from the Slovenian anthem “Zdravljica”, in the handwriting of its author France Prešeren.

The design
A diagonal line runs across the inner part of the coin from the upper left to the centre of the lower edge. In the upper right are the inscriptions “25 YEARS” and “REPUBLIKA SLOVENIJA”. Below them, “dočákat' dan”, an excerpt from the Slovenian anthem “Zdravljica”, can be read in the handwriting of its author, France Prešeren. The year “2016” is indicated at the lower edge of the coin.

The twelve stars of the European flag are depicted on the outer ring of the coin.
Background on the topic
Before 1991, Slovenia was a constituent republic of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. During the 1980s, demands for political liberalization, free elections and greater autonomy intensified there. At the same time, economic and political conflicts between the Yugoslav republics grew more acute. Following the end of communist one-party rule, multiparty elections were held in Slovenia in 1990.

In a referendum on 23 December 1990, a clear majority of eligible voters supported an independent state. On 25 June 1991, the Slovenian parliament adopted the declarations and constitutional acts required for secession from Yugoslavia. This was followed by a brief armed conflict between Slovenian forces and the Yugoslav People’s Army, known as the Ten-Day War. Under the Brioni Agreement, implementation of independence was initially suspended for three months. In October 1991, Slovenia completed its separation as an independent state. International recognition followed at the beginning of 1992; in May of the same year, the country became a member of the United Nations.

France Prešeren was a Slovenian poet of the 19th century. His work helped establish Slovenian as a literary and cultural language. The poem “Zdravljica”, approximately “A Toast” in English, was written at a time when the Slovenes did not yet have their own state and belonged to the Habsburg Empire. It combines the hope for freedom with the idea of peaceful coexistence among peoples. The seventh stanza became the Slovenian national anthem.

Linking independence with Prešeren’s text places the founding of the state in a broader historical context: modern political independence was preceded by the cultivation of the language, literature and the development of Slovenian national consciousness. The 25th anniversary therefore provided an occasion to recall not only the events of 1991, but also their cultural prehistory.
