The design
The design depicts two families embracing the globe. The year of issue “2015” is shown at the top, and the name of the coin designer “C. Principe” on the left. The mintmark R can be seen on the arm of a family member on the right. The design is framed by two inscriptions: “VIII INCONTRO MONDIALE DELLE FAMIGLIE” (the VIII World Meeting of Families) in a semicircle along the upper edge and “CITTA' DEL VATICANO” along the lower edge.
The outer coin ring features the twelve stars of the European flag.
Background on the topic
The World Meeting took place from 22 to 27 September 2015 in Philadelphia in the United States. It was held under the motto “Love Is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive” (“Love is our mission: the family fully alive”). The programme included a pastoral-theological congress, religious services and public events. Pope Francis attended on the final two days and celebrated a Mass on Benjamin Franklin Parkway to conclude the meeting.

The series of World Meetings was established in 1994 by Pope John Paul II. The first meeting was held in Rome; thereafter, the venues alternated between different countries and continents. The gatherings were organised by the then Pontifical Council for the Family together with the respective host diocese. They were aimed not only at clergy and specialists, but above all at families from different countries.

In terms of content, the meetings were based on the Catholic teaching on marriage and the family. According to this teaching, the family is understood as a place where faith is passed on, mutual care is provided and social responsibility is exercised. In Philadelphia, theological questions were addressed alongside everyday issues such as education, illness, disability, migration, poverty and support for families.

The meeting took place during a period of intensive internal Church consultations on marriage, the family and pastoral care. An Extraordinary Synod of Bishops on these questions had already taken place in Rome in 2014; in October 2015, it was followed by the Ordinary Synod of Bishops on the Family. Among other things, the discussions concerned accompanying people in different family situations and the Church’s approach to divorced persons who had remarried.

The choice of the event as the subject of the coin can be explained by its close institutional connection with the Holy See and by the international character of the event. For the Vatican City State, the meeting provided an opportunity to address a central theme of the pontificate at the time and of the Church consultations in 2015.
