Background on the topic
Ilmari Tapiovaara belonged to the generation of Finnish designers whose work was closely connected with reconstruction after the Second World War. New homes, schools, student residences and public facilities required robust, space-saving furniture that could be manufactured industrially. Finland’s timber industry provided good conditions for constructions made of solid wood and bent plywood.

Tapiovaara studied at the Hochschule für Kunstgewerbe in Helsinki. Study and work stays abroad brought him into contact with European modernism, including the circle around the French-Swiss architect Le Corbusier. At the same time, he drew on Finnish design traditions, particularly the laminated wood processing developed by Alvar Aalto. His focus was not on individual pieces for a small group of buyers, but on functional objects that could be produced in series and used in different spaces.

Among his best-known designs is the Domus chair, originally developed for the Domus Academica student residence in Helsinki. Its moulded plywood components, short armrests and stackability met the practical requirements of communal spaces. Other widely used works include the Pirkka and Mademoiselle furniture series. In addition to furniture, Tapiovaara also designed interiors and worked as a teacher. He also worked for periods on international development projects, where he dealt with local furniture production and available materials.

The commemoration on a circulation coin can be viewed in the context of the role of design in Finland’s cultural self-representation. In the 20th century, furniture and industrial design became an internationally recognised part of Finnish culture. The milestone birthday provided a concrete occasion to highlight a designer whose works shaped everyday life in homes and public facilities. The cropped piece of furniture in the coin’s design does not refer to a portrait, but to Tapiovaara’s actual field of work: construction, materials and serial production.
