The coin commemorates the 50th anniversary of the accession to the throne of Grand Duke Jean. The design shows the left-facing portraits of Grand Dukes Henri and Jean, the names “Jean” and “Henri”, the years “1964” and “2014”, and a crown. The inscription “50e ANNIVERSAIRE DE L’ACCESSION AU TRÔNE DU GRAND-DUC JEAN” appears along the upper edge.

The design
The inner part of the coin depicts the portraits of Grand Dukes Henri and Jean, both facing left. Above the portrait of Grand Duke Jean, the year “1964” and a crown are shown. Below the portraits appear the names “Jean” and “Henri” as well as the year “2014”.

The upper edge of the inner part of the coin bears the circular inscription “50e ANNIVERSAIRE DE L’ACCESSION AU TRÔNE DU GRAND-DUC JEAN”.

The twelve stars of the European flag are depicted on the outer ring of the coin.
Background on the topic
Jean was born in 1921 as the eldest son of the future Grand Duchess Charlotte and Prince Félix of Bourbon-Parma. During the German occupation of Luxembourg in the Second World War, the grand ducal family lived in exile. Jean joined the British Army and served with the Irish Guards. He took part in the Normandy landings and the subsequent advance of the Allies. In September 1944, he returned to liberated Luxembourg with Allied troops. These experiences shaped his public role even before his reign.

Jean assumed office after his mother Charlotte abdicated. The change of throne thus followed a procedure that Jean himself later applied: in 2000, he abdicated in favour of his eldest son Henri. The joint depiction of father and son therefore refers to the dynastic continuity between two successive heads of state.

Luxembourg is a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary democracy. The Grand Duke is the head of state, while political decision-making lies primarily with the government and parliament. His duties include formal acts in the legislative process, the appointment of the government and representational responsibilities. Jean’s reign coincided with a period of profound change: the economy, long shaped by the steel industry, developed increasingly into an internationally oriented financial and service location. At the same time, Luxembourg participated in the expansion of European cooperation and already hosted key European institutions.

After his abdication, Jean largely withdrew from state duties but remained publicly present as a former head of state. He died in 2019. The coin issue used a milestone anniversary of his reign as an occasion to highlight the orderly transfer of office within the Luxembourg grand ducal house. At the same time, the subject corresponded to Luxembourg’s coin tradition, in which the head of state and the dynasty frequently appear as national motifs.
