Issue occasion
The commemorative coin marks the 25th birthday of Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume. The design shows Grand Duke Henri in the left foreground and Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume behind him on the right, both looking to the right. The year 2006 is shown below the portraits, with the inscription “LËTZEBUERG” running in a semicircle above them.
The design
The coin features in the inner part, in the foreground on the left, the portrait of His Royal Highness Grand Duke Henri and, behind it on the right, the portrait of Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume, both facing right. The year 2006 appears below the portraits between the letter “S” and the mint mark. The inscription “LËTZEBUERG” runs above the portraits in a semicircle along the upper edge of the inner part of the coin. The outer ring of the coin bears the 12 stars of the European Union.
Background on the topic
Guillaume was born in 1981 as the eldest son of the then Hereditary Grand Duke Henri and Maria Teresa Mestre, who was born in Cuba. When Henri succeeded his father Jean to the throne in 2000, Guillaume became the immediate heir to the throne. In Luxembourg, the title Hereditary Grand Duke denotes the person who stands first in the line of succession. In this role, Guillaume took on representative duties and represented Luxembourg, among other occasions, at official visits and economic missions.
The Grand Duchy is a parliamentary monarchy. The Grand Duke is the head of state, while political decision-making lies with Parliament and the Government within the framework of the Constitution. The line of succession therefore embodies above all the institutional continuity of the state. Henri had served as Grand Duke since 2000. Following his abdication, Guillaume succeeded him as head of state on 3 October 2025.
His 25th birthday was regarded as a dynastic and biographical turning point: Guillaume had largely completed his education and was increasingly taking on public duties. He studied politics and also completed military training at the British Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. His later marriage to Stéphanie de Lannoy did not take place until 2012 and therefore played no role in the coin issue.
Luxembourg frequently used its early national 2-euro commemorative coins for themes from the history and present of the grand ducal house. Such motifs refer to the monarchy’s special position in the small country’s official self-presentation. The connection between the reigning Grand Duke and his then successor also highlighted the existing state leadership and the intended continuation of the dynasty. The milestone birthday provided a clearly defined, officially comprehensible occasion for this. The issue is therefore to be understood less as a commemoration of a single political event than as a depiction of monarchical succession.
