Issue occasion

The commemorative coin marks the 500th anniversary of Monaco’s independence and honours Lucien I. GRIMALDI. The design shows his profile portrait facing left, surrounded by the inscription “SOUVERAINETE DE MONACO”, the years “1512” and “2012”, and the inscription “Lucien Ier”. It also features ornamentation, a cornucopia as the mark of the Paris Mint, a flower as the mint master’s mark, and the twelve stars of the European flag.

The design
In the centre of the coin is a profile portrait of Lucien I. GRIMALDI, facing left. Above the portrait, the words “SOUVERAINETE DE MONACO” are inscribed in an arc enclosing the upper centre of the coin, flanked by the years “1512” and “2012”. There is an ornament at each end of the inscription. In the lower section, a cornucopia, the mark of the Paris Mint, is depicted to the left of the portrait, and a flower, the mint master’s mark, to the right. The inscription “Lucien Ier” is inscribed above the cornucopia.

The twelve stars of the European flag are depicted on the outer ring of the coin.
Background on the topic
Lucien I. Grimaldi was Lord of Monaco from 1505 to 1523. The title of Prince was adopted by the dynasty only later. He descended from the Genoese noble family Grimaldi, whose members had been vying for control of the fortified Rock of Monaco since the late 13th century. At that time, the small lordship comprised Monaco as well as Menton and Roquebrune.

At the beginning of Lucien’s reign, Monaco’s position was by no means secure. Genoa continued to claim influence over the territory. In 1506 and 1507, the fortress was besieged for several months by Genoese troops. Lucien led its defence until the siege was lifted. The position of the Rock above a sheltered harbour gave Monaco strategic importance despite its small territory, on a coast contested by France and the Italian powers.

The year selected for commemoration refers to the recognition of Monegasque autonomy by the French King Ludwig XII. It confirmed Lucien’s rule and strengthened Monaco’s claim not to be subordinate to any neighbouring territorial power. However, independence in the modern constitutional sense did not arise through a single founding act. Monaco remained dependent on the protection of greater powers and later alternated between close alignment with Spain and France. At the same time, the rule was strongly based on the personal and dynastic rights of the Grimaldi.

Lucien was murdered in 1523 in the Prince’s Palace by members of the Doria family. He was initially succeeded by his still underage son Honoré I., for whom relatives assumed the regency. The choice of Lucien as the commemorated figure therefore links the dynastic history of the Grimaldi with the period in which Monaco consolidated its claim to independent territorial rule against Genoa and other powers.
