Vukovar is situated on the Danube in eastern Croatia and was an economic and cultural centre of the region until the dissolution of Yugoslavia. People from various ethnic groups and religious communities lived in the city. Its location on the Danube and its industry shaped Vukovar’s development as much as its historical ties to Central Europe.

During the Croatian War of Independence (Kroatienkrieg), Vukovar became the site of a months-long siege in 1991. The city was attacked by the Yugoslav People’s Army (Jugoslawische Volksarmee) and Serbian paramilitary units and was largely destroyed. After its capture in November 1991, expulsions, mistreatment of prisoners and killings took place. Particularly well known is the crime at the Ovčara agricultural estate, where numerous prisoners abducted from Vukovar Hospital were murdered. The case was later heard before the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (Internationalen Strafgerichtshof für das ehemalige Jugoslawien).

A landmark of the city is the Wasserturm von Vukovar. It was hit many times during the fighting but remained standing, thereby becoming a visible symbol of the destruction and continued existence of the city. Today, the tower is also a memorial site. Its damaged surface has been largely preserved; the bullet holes refer to the events of 1991, while the observation deck and memorial commemorate the victims and defenders.

The choice of Vukovar for a coin in the Cities Series is therefore not linked solely to the cityscape. It refers to a place where the history of independent Croatia is particularly closely connected with the memory of the war. The issue also places Vukovar among the series of Croatian cities shaped by history and culture. If the coin’s design depicts the tower, this building stands as a representative of the city and of its central role in Croatian commemorative culture.
