Issue occasion
The commemorative coin honors Sipsik, a well-known character in Estonian children’s literature.
Background on the topic
Sipsik originated as a literary character created by the Estonian writer Eno Raud (1928–1996). The children’s book of the same name was first published in 1962; the original illustrations were created by Edgar Valter (1929–2006), who illustrated numerous Estonian children’s books. Raud primarily wrote for young readers and later also created the stories about the three “Naksitrallid”, usually referred to in German as “Drei lustige Gesellen”.
The Sipsik stories focus on the siblings Anu and Mart. Mart makes a doll for Anu from scraps of fabric as a birthday present. It is given the name Sipsik and comes to life. Whether it can actually speak and act or whether this expresses the child’s imagination remains part of the narrative approach. The individual episodes address everyday experiences such as playing, family life, minor mishaps and discoveries. Fantastical elements are combined with a familiar domestic setting.
The book was published during the period when Estonia was part of the Soviet Union. In this political environment, Estonian-language children’s literature also served to keep its own language and cultural heritage alive in everyday life. Sipsik was read by several generations and translated into numerous languages. Edgar Valter’s visual design permanently shaped the appearance of the rag doll. The material reached a wider audience through an Estonian animated film released in 2020.
The choice of the motif can therefore be understood as a reference to a shared literary childhood experience. Unlike state figures, buildings or political anniversaries, Sipsik points to everyday culture, language and children’s literature. At the same time, the character is associated with two influential representatives of Estonian book culture, Eno Raud and Edgar Valter. However, the year of issue is not directly connected with a specific milestone anniversary.

Lediglich der Hinweis "Additional print run of 8500 coin cards" unterscheidet die zweite Auflage von der ersten, in der steht "Mintage 1,000,000 of which 8500 BU on coin cards".
