Issue occasion
The commemorative coin honours 100 years of skiing in Andorra, where the population is said to have first encountered this sport in 1924. The design shows the lower part of the silhouette of a skier, as well as the inscriptions “ANDORRA” and “2024”.
The design
It is believed that the population of Andorra first came into contact with skiing in 1924. Skiing has since become the king of sports in Andorra and, thanks to its snow-covered mountains, spectacular landscapes and world-class ski resorts, has made the country a very popular holiday destination. The coin design commemorates the time 100 years ago when this sport emerged in Andorra. Depicted are the lower part of the silhouette of a skier, the name of the issuing country, “ANDORRA”, and the year of issue, “2024”.
The outer ring of the coin depicts the twelve stars of the European flag.

Background on the topic
Andorra is located in the eastern Pyrenees between France and Spain. The country’s territory consists predominantly of high mountains; numerous peaks reach elevations of more than 2,000 metres. Snow, steep slopes and high-altitude valleys provide natural conditions for alpine skiing. Before modern transport routes were established, however, the valleys were comparatively difficult to access. The population lived mainly from livestock farming, agriculture and regional trade.
The development of skiing is closely linked to Andorra’s economic and social transformation in the 20th century. Since the 1950s and 1960s, ski lifts, pistes, hotels and improved road connections were established. Pas de la Casa and Soldeu were among the early winter sports resorts. Later, several areas were connected technically and organisationally. Today, the larger ski regions include Grandvalira, Pal Arinsal and Ordino Arcalís, among others.
Winter tourism also changed the economic structure of the small state. Agriculture and livestock farming declined in importance, while services, retail, accommodation and gastronomy grew. Skiing thus became not only a leisure activity, but also part of Andorra’s tourism orientation. At the same time, a local sporting culture developed, with clubs, ski schools and national federations.
Andorra has regularly participated in the Winter Games since the 1976 Winter Olympics. Andorran athletes mainly compete in alpine skiing. The country has also hosted international competitions, including races and final events of the Alpine Ski World Cup. Such events combine the sporting use of the mountain regions with Andorra’s international presence.
The choice of this theme for a commemorative coin can therefore be explained by the close connection between the landscape, economic development and national image abroad. Skiing exemplifies the transition from a remote, agriculture-based Pyrenean society to a state oriented towards tourism and services.
