Issue occasion
The coin commemorates care for senior citizens under the motto “CUIDEM LA NOSTRA GENT GRAN”. The design shows the hand of a young person holding a hand marked by age, with a stethoscope below it. Depictions of the SARS-CoV-2 virus around the inscription “ANDORRA” symbolise the state’s commitment to preventing the spread of the virus and caring for its citizens.
The design
The coin theme “CUIDEM LA NOSTRA GENT GRAN” (We care for our senior citizens) is depicted by the hand of a young person holding another hand marked by age. A stethoscope is shown beneath the hands. The name of the issuing country, “ANDORRA”, surrounds several depictions of the SARS-CoV-2 virus and symbolises the country's commitment to preventing the spread of the virus and caring for its citizens. The coin design also shows the year of issue “2021”. The twelve stars of the European flag are depicted on the outer ring of the coin.
Background on the topic
The issue is related to the COVID-19 pandemic, which, like the other European states, has confronted Andorra with health and social challenges since 2020. The coronavirus was particularly able to spread indoors and through close personal contact. However, caring for older people could not be provided without such contact. Assistance with eating, personal hygiene or medical procedures continued to require close physical proximity.
At the same time, older people faced an increased risk of severe illness. In addition to age, pre-existing conditions often played a role. Communal residential and care facilities were particularly vulnerable because many people lived together in limited space and were regularly cared for by nursing staff or relatives. Protective measures such as restrictions on visits were intended to prevent infections, but could intensify loneliness and social isolation. Families, professional caregivers and public authorities therefore faced the difficult task of combining infection control with personal care and attention.
The Catalan expression “gent gran” is a common, respectful collective term for older people. The motto does not place an individual person or institution at the center, but rather a social obligation. It refers to the responsibility of younger generations, the healthcare system and public authorities toward people who were particularly vulnerable during the pandemic.
The fact that Andorra selected this theme for a commemorative coin in 2021 can be explained by the situation at the time: the pandemic continued to determine everyday life, while vaccination campaigns for the first time provided additional protection against severe illness. The issue thus documents a crisis that was still ongoing while also honoring care, medical support and family assistance. As a small state with close-knit social structures, Andorra emphasized the idea of mutual care rather than honoring a single historical event or a particular personality. Although Andorra is not part of the European Union (Europäische Union), it is permitted to issue its own euro coins on the basis of a monetary agreement.
