Issue occasion

The commemorative coin pays tribute to the wolf as Estonia’s national animal. The design depicts the silhouette of a wolf in front of a forest, along with the inscriptions “EESTI” and “CANIS LUPUS”, the Latin term for wolf.

The design
The coin’s design features a wolf silhouette in front of a forest. Along the upper inner ring of the coin, the country name “EESTI” appears on the left, the year of issue “2021” on the right, and the inscription “CANIS LUPUS” (Latin for “wolf”) at the top.
The twelve stars of the European flag are depicted on the outer ring of the coin.
Background on the topic
The grey wolf belongs to Estonia’s native fauna. The country’s extensive forests and wetlands provide it with suitable refuges; at the same time, it requires large ranges. As a large predator, it feeds mainly on wild ungulates. It is therefore part of the ecological fabric of Estonia’s forest landscapes. However, its presence also leads to conflicts, particularly when livestock is harmed and because of competing hunting interests. The population is therefore monitored and hunting is regulated by the state.

In Estonian tradition, the wolf appears both as a feared predator and as an intelligent, enduring and adaptable creature. It occurs in fairy tales, legends and popular sayings. As in other regions of Europe, its name was sometimes replaced by circumlocutions because, according to older beliefs, the direct mention of a feared animal was to be avoided. This cultural presence distinguishes it from a purely zoological national symbol.

The wolf was designated the national animal in 2018 as part of an initiative supported by nature and cultural organisations. The choice complemented established Estonian natural symbols such as the barn swallow as the national bird and the cornflower as the national flower. The wolf was favoured both for its role in native ecosystems and for its place in language and folk culture. The decision also drew attention to the coexistence of humans and large predators.

The coin issue was not linked to the anniversary of a single historical event. Rather, it took up a state symbol established only a few years earlier and made it visible in everyday circulation. The design’s reference to the forest situates the animal in its habitat and thus points beyond national symbolism to Estonia’s forest-rich landscape and the protection of biological diversity.

Additional information
