The design
The coin design was created by Maria Anna Frisone and depicts two nurses giving each other strength through an embrace. The coin is dedicated to all those who stood on the front line in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic. The inscription “HEROES OF THE PANDEMIC” is arranged in a semicircle at the top. The inscription “MALTA – 2021” is arranged in a semicircle at the bottom.

The twelve stars of the European flag are depicted on the coin’s outer ring.
Background on the topic
Covid-19 is an infectious disease caused by the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. After the virus, initially identified regionally, had spread across numerous states, the World Health Organization declared the outbreak a pandemic on 11 March 2020. In addition to severe cases of illness and deaths, the pandemic led to far-reaching restrictions on everyday life, including quarantine, contact restrictions and temporary closures of schools, shops and public facilities.

Malta faced particular challenges due to its high population density and close international connections. Travel and the tourism sector, which is important to the country, had to be restricted. To contain infections, Malta relied, among other measures, on testing, contact tracing, quarantine regulations and restrictions on public gatherings. At the same time, medical care had to be maintained and prepared for additional Covid-19 cases. Vaccination against the virus also began in Malta at the end of December 2020; the vaccines were provided as part of the European Union’s joint procurement.

The expression “on the front line” referred not only to hospital workers. It also included staff in care and residential facilities, emergency services, employees in laboratories and testing centres, as well as other occupational groups who worked directly with patients or particularly vulnerable people despite the risk of infection. Many faced long working hours, protective clothing, changing medical requirements and considerable psychological stress. This was compounded by activities to maintain public life, for example in supply, transport and public safety.

Against this background, the issue forms part of a broader public remembrance of the social consequences of the pandemic. In 2021, the health crisis had not yet come to an end, but vaccination campaigns opened a new phase in combating it. The coin therefore does not commemorate a completed historical episode, but refers to an exceptional situation that was still ongoing at the time and to the role of those occupational groups that maintained the healthcare and supply systems.
