Issue occasion

The coin commemorates the 120th birthday of Dimitri Mitropoulos. The design depicts his profile against a background of musical notes. It is complemented by Greek inscriptions commemorating the anniversary and referring to the Hellenic Republic, as well as a palmette and the monogram of the coin’s designer, George Stamatopoulos.

The design
The inner part of the coin features the profile of Dimitri Mitropoulos against a background of musical notes. Along the left side of the inner edge of the coin, the inscriptions “120th BIRTHDAY OF DIMITRI MITROPOULOS” and “HELLENIC REPUBLIC” can be read in Greek. In the upper left, the issue year “2016” and a palmette, the mintmark of the Greek Mint, are shown. In the lower right is the monogram of the coin’s designer (George Stamatopoulos).

The outer ring of the coin features the twelve stars of the European flag.
Background on the topic
Dimitri Mitropoulos was born in Athens in 1896 and initially received his musical education at the Athens Conservatory, later also in Brussels and Berlin. He emerged as a pianist, composer and conductor. He gained international attention, among other things, by combining the solo part with orchestral direction: at a performance of Sergei Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto, he played the piano part and conducted at the same time.

After working in Greece, his career shifted to the United States. For many years, he led the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra and subsequently became music director of the New York Philharmonic (New Yorker Philharmoniker). He also regularly conducted at the Metropolitan Opera and with European orchestras and opera houses. He was personally and professionally connected with Leonard Bernstein, the later music director of the New York Philharmonic; Mitropoulos supported his early career.

His repertoire ranged from the classical and Romantic orchestral literature to twentieth-century music. Among other things, he advocated works by Gustav Mahler as well as compositions of the Second Viennese School, which were by no means yet commonplace in the concert life of the time. Mitropoulos usually conducted from memory and without a baton. He also left behind his own compositions, although conducting was the focus of his public career.

Mitropoulos died in 1960 during an orchestral rehearsal in Milan. Despite his international career, his origins remained a constant part of his public image. For Greece, he embodied a musician who had emerged from the country’s own musical education and helped shape concert life in Europe and North America. The round anniversary of his birth therefore provided an occasion to commemorate his role in Greek music history and his international career on a circulation coin.
