Issue occasion

The commemorative coin is dedicated to Baltic culture. The design features an amber disc as one of its most characteristic symbols. A cross made of drilled dots on the disc represents the Earth’s axis; above it is “LIETUVA”, flanked by the mint mark and the year “2016”.

The design
The coin design features an amber disc, one of the most characteristic symbols of Baltic culture. The disc is decorated with a cross made of drilled dots—a design representing the Earth's axis. At the top is the name of the issuing state, “LIETUVA”, flanked by the mint mark and the year of issue, “2016”.

The outer ring of the coin depicts the twelve stars of the European flag.
Background on the topic
The term “Baltic culture” here does not generally refer to the cultures of all countries bordering the Baltic Sea. It primarily means the historical traditions of the Baltic peoples in the eastern Baltic region. Their languages form a distinct branch of the Indo-European language family. Today, only Lithuanian and Latvian are still spoken; Old Prussian, which was also a Baltic language, died out in the modern era. The Balts never formed a unified state, but consisted of various tribal and regional groups.

Lithuania was not Christianized until the late Middle Ages. As a result, elements of pre-Christian beliefs can be traced for a comparatively long time in customs, songs and oral traditions. These include interpretations of nature, celestial bodies and a structured order of the world. Their precise interpretation is difficult, however: archaeological signs and later folkloric traditions cannot readily be equated.

Amber is fossilized tree resin found particularly along the shores of the Baltic Sea. It was already being processed into jewelry, pendants and other objects in the Stone Age. Finds from the Baltic region attest to discs, buttons and figures with perforations or geometric patterns. Amber also reached Central and Southern Europe via far-reaching trade and exchange networks. The so-called Amber Road was not a single, fixed route, but rather a network of changing connections between the Baltic region and areas farther to the south.

As a material, amber thus connects archaeology, trade and religious or symbolic ideas. It is also suitable as a common characteristic of the Baltic region without referring exclusively to a ruler, a political event or a single era.

The issue was apparently not tied to a specific anniversary. Instead, it focused on Lithuania’s cultural and linguistic roots within the Baltic context. In this respect, the occasion differed from commemorative coins dealing with the founding of states, historical figures or buildings.
