Issue occasion

The coin commemorates the wedding of Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and Countess Stéphanie de Lannoy. The design shows Grand Duke Henri, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume and, between them, Countess Stéphanie. Below them are the inscriptions “PRËNZENHOCHZAÏT” and “LËTZEBUERG”, as well as the year “2012”.

The design
In the inner part of the coin, His Royal Highness Grand Duke Henri is shown on the left, Hereditary Grand Duke Guillaume on the right, and Countess Stéphanie between them. The inscription “PRËNZENHOCHZAÏT” or “LËTZEBUERG” and the year “2012”, flanked by the mint mark and the mint master’s initials, are located in the lower part of the inner section.

The twelve stars of the European flag are depicted on the coin’s outer ring.
Background on the topic
Luxembourg is a parliamentary monarchy. The head of state comes from the House of Nassau-Weilburg; his powers are limited by the constitution. Guillaume, born in 1981, is the eldest son of Henri and Grand Duchess Maria Teresa. When his father acceded to the throne in 2000, he became Hereditary Grand Duke and thus the official heir to the throne. Since Henri’s abdication in October 2025, Guillaume has been Grand Duke of Luxembourg.

Stéphanie de Lannoy was born in Belgium in 1984. She comes from the Belgian noble house of Lannoy, whose name can be traced back to a place in historic Hainaut. Before her marriage, she studied German studies, among other subjects. Through her marriage, she became Hereditary Grand Duchess of Luxembourg. Following the change of reign in 2025, she holds the title of Grand Duchess.

The celebrations took place in October 2012 in Luxembourg City. The civil ceremony at the town hall was followed the next day by the religious ceremony in Notre-Dame Cathedral. A civil marriage had previously been made possible by an amendment to the house regulations of the grand-ducal house; members of the dynasty also required the consent of the head of state in order to retain their position in the line of succession. The marriage therefore had not only a private character but also a dynastic and constitutional dimension.

Luxembourg regularly features events from the grand-ducal house on its commemorative coins, such as jubilees, birthdays, births and deaths. This is connected with the role of the dynasty as a visible component of state continuity. The marriage of the then heir to the throne was therefore suitable as a national commemorative motif. The Luxembourgish term “Prënzenhochzäit” means “princely wedding” and was the common designation for the public celebrations. Issuing the coin in the same year as the wedding established a direct connection between the dynastic event and the coinage of the time.
